India toured Australia in January 2016 for five-match ODI series followed by three T20Is. After losing the first four ODIs, the MS Dhoni-led Team India won the fifth ODI played at Sydney Cricket Ground. This game which marked Japrit Bumrah’s ODI debut was followed by three-match T20I series.

After a dominating display in the ODIs, the hosts were the clear favourites in the shorter formats played at Adelaide, Melbourne and Sydney. In the series opener, Virat Kohli once again proved why is unstoppable when it comes to games at the Adelaide Oval irrespective of the format.

The flamboyant batsman amassed 90* off 55 balls which propelled the Indian total to 188-3. Chasing 189 runs, the hosts were bundled out for just 151 runs in 19.3 overs with Jasprit Bumrah being the chief tormentor (3-23). India who got off to a best-possible start to the T20I series at Adelaide, continued their domination with the bat at the MCG having scored 184-3 in 20 overs.

In reply, Australia managed to score 157-8 despite skipper Aaron Finch’s 74 off 48 balls. This victory helped India take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the T20I series before heading to Sydney for the final fixture.

At the SCG, an unbeaten century (124* off 71 balls) from Shane Watson took the hosts’ total to 197 runs. Chasing a stiff target for a historic series whitewash, India managed a sensational as well thrilling last-ball victory as Suresh Raina and Yuvraj Singh completed the proceedings after half-centuries from Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli.

This famous whitewash against the ruthless Aussies in their own backyard after going down 1-4 in the ODIs will be remembered for many more years for Team India’s valiant fight.
