Pant, who last played a Test match against West Indies at Kingston, was also a part of the squad that played against South Africa last month but the second-choice wicketkeeper-batsman was left out of the XI in all three matches. WriddhimanSaha who replaced Pant against the Proteas was brilliant behind the stumps.

Given his glovework and batting in the recently concluded T20I series against Bangladesh which drew a lot of criticism, Pant is unlikely to replace Saha in the XI.

Also, contributing to his exclusion will be the 22-year-old’s Test match temperament and shot selection- the two areas which he needs to work upon to cement his place in Test XI. Pant certainly might improve over time for that he must return to first-class cricket and work upon his major issues.
