Alastair Cook’s stubborn resistance was a talking point in his marathon 528-ball inning against an influential Pakistan bowling attack in Abu Dhabi in October 2015. Facing a deficit of 523 runs, England were in need of inspiration, and Cook was suffering from loss of form.

But his individual captain’s inning ensured that England salvaged a draw and put themselves in a potential position for victory. He batted for close to 14 hours, one of the longest ever innings and stroked just 18 boundaries, a symbol of his immense patience and resistance.

This was his highest score outside England, and the captain benefitted from rich vein of form following it as this proved to be a breakthrough inning for him.
