The Indian men’s cricket team entered the new year on the back of a powerful home season. But things took a drastic turn for them in New Zealand. After winning the T20I series 5-0, they lost the ODI series 3-0 and the Test series 2-0, despite being number 2 and 1 in the formats respectively.
As always with the Indian fans, the blame game has started and points have been raised to look at new faces. The Board of Cricket Control in India (BCCI), meanwhile, announced on Wednesday (4th March) that Sunil Joshi and Harvinder Singh have been added to the men’s selection panel, with Joshi taking over as the chief selector, a position previously held by MSK Prasad.
With a new face at the realm of the selection committee, it is to be seen whether new players will get a chance to play for India in the coming fixtures. There’s no shortage of cricketing talent in India with some players standing apart from the others.
Let’s take a look at 5 players who should get a chance under the new selectors:
1. Yashasvi Jaiswal
Yashasvi Jaiswal became a household name in India after his stupendous run in this year’s Under-19 World Cup, where he scored 400 runs in just 6 matches as an opener. Although India failed to win the World Cup, Jaiswal gave his all, and was named the ‘Player of the Series’.
The 18-year-old Jaiswal first came in limelight after hitting 173 in a Test Match for India Under-19. Originally from Uttar Pradesh, he moved to Mumbai to continue his passion for cricket and now represents Mumbai in the domestic circuit. Last year, he made a fantastic 564 runs at 112.8 in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. Apart from his batting talent, he also bowls a good bit of leg-spin.
Not long ago, he used to live in tents and sold panipuri with his father for a living. From there to be sold for a whopping 3.40 crores to the Rajasthan Royals in the IPL to almost winning the Under-19 World Cup, Yashasvi Jaiswal has truly come a long way. Seeing his progress, it shouldn’t be long before he is considered for the Indian national cricket team.
