3. Gujarat Lions
The Rajkot-based team had a pretty decent season making their debut in 2016. They made it to the knock-outs but couldn’t advance any further. With a strong batting line-up Gujarat felt a need to add bowlers in the team and thus they picked as many as 6 bowlers and three allrounders while just two batsmen in England opener Jason Roy and UAE batsman Chirag Suri were offered contracts at their base price.
They were the most economical team and the highest they spent was 1 crore on Roy. He was the only high profile player. 23-year-old right-arm medium Basil Thampi from Kerala who was a part of the South Zone squad in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Zonal T20 tournament is known for bowling accurate Yorkers. Thampi was bought for INR 85 lakhs. Punjab pacer Manpreet Gony was amongst wickets in the Zonal T20s and it landed him a 60 lakh contract with the Lions.
A surprise pick by the team was Baroda medium pacer Munaf Patel who played just two matches for the domestic team in the T20 tournament and went wicketless. He last featured in the Mumbai Indians during the 2013 season and played just 4 matches.
