The Centurion Test continued with the twist and turns throughout the day 4 as well. However, by the end of the day, the scoreline of India being 35/3 chasing 287 pretty much suggested that Proteas had got this in the bag. A series defeat is possibly on the cards for India on the final day of the game.
Even the former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra stated that things were quite grim for India. Reminiscing memories of the Test match between India and Australia in Bengaluru, the commentator indicated that India were missing key figures this time around.
The writing is on the wall
Speaking of the dressing room environment, the cricket expert felt that the morale would already be down. With three top-order wickets, South Africa have almost ensured a victory unless something miraculous happens.
“I can sense the atmosphere in the dressing room completely dejected. The writing is actually on the wall. Of course, you’ll try to cheer yourself up. Remind yourself of the days where you’ve done well, bounced back from almost the dead,” he said.
The latest instance of India creating a turnaround brings us to the game against Australia in Bangalore last year. After being drawn completely to the backfoot in the first two days, India registered a fantastic victory by 75 runs. Aakash recalled the same but also mentioned that a key component was missing here.
“I remember the Test match against Australia from Bengaluru. You can revisit this game and wonder this can still be done. That’s when you’ll also realize that a Rahane-Pujara partnership in that match was really important. This time, a key figure is missing. You’ll think about missed opportunities,” Aakash Chopra added.
So far in the Test series, only Virat Kohli amongst the top order has shown resilience in taking on the Proteas attack. With the skipper already dismissed, Aakash felt that India didn’t have any chance to win the game.
“You know that your No.1 batsman in the side who’s the only man in form has already been dismissed. The last hope has already been drown. The chances are very grim,” he concluded.
