The match between India and Afghanistan at Dubai International Cricket Stadium didn’t hold any significance for the reason that the Men in Blue have already qualified for the final of the Asia Cup. Nonetheless, Afghanistan played with valour and gave India a run for their money.  In the end, the encounter panned out to be a cliffhanger and both teams had to be satisfied with a tie.

Shahzad and Nabi do the job for the Afghans

After Afghanistan won the toss and elected to bat first, Mohammad Shahzad took them off to a blistering start. Javed Ahmadi, his opening partner, strained and became Ravindra Jadeja’s first victim. The likes of Rahmat Shah, Hashmatullah Shahidi, and the skipper perished in quick succession. However, Shahzad first scored his fifty in 37 balls and accomplished his ton in 88 balls.

The swashbuckling opener went on to score 124 runs from 116 balls and was dismissed by Kedar Jadhav. Mohammad Nabi took charge thereafter and scored 64 runs from 56 balls with the help of three boundaries and four sixes. Afghanistan eventually managed 252 runs for the loss of eight wickets. Jadeja turned out to India’s standout bowler having picked up three crucial wickets.

Rashid Khan bowls an incredible 50th over

Ambati Rayudu and KL Rahul put together 110 runs in 103 balls to put India in a commanding position. Nevertheless, both went back to the hut after scoring 57 and 60 respectively. MS Dhoni came in at number four but was nipped out by part-timer Ahmadi. Aftab Alam got rid of Manish Pandey to keep the Afghans in contention. Nevertheless, Dinesh Karthik and Kedar Jadhav looked determined.

To India’s agony, both batters were dismissed one after the other and all of a sudden the Men in Blue needed 48 runs with four wickets remaining. The required rate climbed as Ravindra Jadeja and Deepak Chahar tried their hearts out. In the last two overs, India needed 13 runs and thereafter seven in the last over off Rashid Khan. To everyone’s surprise, Jadeja couldn’t finish off the match as Rashid picked him up in the last ball.
