England, after taking a 2-0 lead courtesy of their resounding victories against India at Edgbaston and Lord’s respectively, slumped to their maiden defeat at Trent Bridge in Nottingham. Their batting couldn’t quite deliver and even their bowling looked short of ideas at times. The fourth Test will be played from August 30 to September 3 at The Rose Bowl in Southampton.

After the lacklustre performance, the Three Lions definitely won’t want to suffer another hiccup, which may land them in a precarious position as far as the five-match series is concerned. In the meantime, the England Cricket Board (ECB) has announced a 14-man squad for the upcoming encounter against Virat Kohli’s men and has only made a couple of alterations.

The replacements

Earlier in the third Test, the Brits were lucky to have the services of Ben Stokes, who was adjudged not guilty in the Bristol-brawl case. Jonny Bairstow, who injured his finger, has been retained and will only take part as a specialist batsman. In that scenario, Jos Buttler will don the wicketkeeping gloves. James Vince of Hampshire was roped in as  Bairstow’s cover.

Vince has been in stupendous form, having scored 847 runs for his county in nine matches at an incredible average of 56.46. Moreover, the right-handed batsman also notched three centuries and a couple of fifties in the event. Apart from Vince, there hasn’t been any new inclusion.

James Porter, who was in the squad for the first three games, wasn’t retained. Alastair Cook was earlier speculated to miss the encounter due to the birth of his third child. However, the management hasn’t left him out of the squad. All in all, Joe Root and his men have a tough task ahead of them.

Here is the squad

Joe Root (C), Moeen Ali, James Anderson, Jonny Bairstow, Stuart Broad, Jos Buttler, Alastair Cook, Sam Curran, Keaton Jennings, Ollie Pope, Adil Rashid, Chris Woakes, Ben Stokes, James Vince
