The Indian team is currently crossing swords with England in the first ODI of the three-match series at Trent Bridge in Nottingham. After Virat Kohli won the toss and elected to field first, the wrist spinners dictated terms to their opponents with some immaculate display of line and lengths. The Brits began well with an opening stand of 73 runs from 10.2 overs between Jason Roy and Jonny Bairstow.

However, Kuldeep struck first blood and a mistimed stroke from Jason Roy went straight into the palms of Umesh Yadav. The run rate was seven when Roy perished at it dropped drastically. Alex Hales didn’t play today’s match owing to a side strain and Joe Root came to bat and number three. He perished without contributing much as Kuldeep dismissed him for the second time on their tour.

England’s dismal record

In the first ten overs, the Poms managed 71 runs, however, a flurry of wickets pushed them back significantly. In the next ten overs, they could manage only 36 runs and lost three wickets as per renowned statistician Andy Zaltzman. The tweakers kept a lid on the scoring to a large extent and it was England’s lowest score from 11 to 20 overs both in terms of runs scored and wickets lost since the 2015 World Cup.

Ben Stokes, who made a comeback to the ODI team following his hamstring injury also strained to find momentum.  Stokes scored only eight runs in his first 36 balls and Zaltzman mentioned that it was his slowest 36 deliveries. The all-rounder also played the final T20I against India at the County Ground in Bristol.

The Trent Bridge in Nottingham is renowned to produce massive scores and is deemed to be a batsman’s paradise. Nevertheless, the past records at the venue didn’t perturb the tweakers and they stuck to the basics to restrict the opponents from playing the big strokes.
