Australia was in for a blow when they lost speedster Jhye Richardson from their World Cup squad bound for England and he was replaced by another Richardson, Kane. Jhye had dislocated his shoulder during an ODI against Pakistan in Sharjah in March and now the time has run out for him to fully recover for the mega show. However, former Australian fast bowler Brett Lee feels that pacers will not be too handy for teams in the World Cup this summer.

Australia, who will kick off their World Cup campaign against Afghanistan on June 2 in Bristol, is currently playing unofficial ODIs against New Zealand XI. The defending champions will be led by Aaron Finch and have seen the return of two of their big stars – Steve Smith and David Warner. The pace department features Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins, Nathan Coulter-Nile and Jason Behrendorff besides Mark.

Timing of WC won’t favour pacers, feels Lee

“We’ve got to keep in mind what time the tournament will be played. It is in June and July and the wickets over there aren’t really conducive to fast bowling at that time of the year. So a lot of people think it will be a bowler’s wicket, but it’s not necessarily the case. I think they will be okay with the brand new ball, but once the shine goes from the ball it’s going to be hard work for the fast bowlers,” Lee, who was speaking on the sidelines of an event, was quoted as saying by Timesnownews.com.

Brett Lee, 42, has over 700 international wickets and played two World Cups for Australia – in 2003 and 2011 and missed the one in 2007 because of injury.

Lee also backed Australia, who beat India and Pakistan in away series recently, to go the distance in the tournament though he stopped short of saying anybody as the favourites. He said all sides will be well prepared well but the team that adapts well with the English conditions will prevail.
