Harbhajan Singh says ‘guru bina gati nahi’ on Virender Sehwag’s ‘cricketers don’t credit their coaches’ comment

Cricket is a sport where coaches play an important role when it comes to developing the potential of a batsman or a bowler or a wicketkeeper. The player may have some extraordinary talent to the game of cricket, but unless that talent is nurtured and pushed in the right direction, the full output of the player is not seen.

Therefore, when Virender Sehwag commented that cricketers do not credit their coaches unlike another sportsperson, his former India teammate Harbhajan Singh took offense to the same and replied in kind. One doesn’t have to look beyond the contribution of coaches in the success of cricket than Ramakant Achrekar’s involvement in the growth and development of Sachin Tendulkar from a teenage prodigy to a legend of the game.

Recently, during a book launch in Mumbai on August 29, former India captain Sehwag was talking about how he felt that Olympics and Commonwealth Games were bigger than cricket. However, he was left shocked that the athletes do not even get 10-20% of the facilities and training that cricket players receive in the game and yet are able to win gold and silver medals for the country making everyone proud.

The former Delhi batsman pointed out that these athletes deserved more accolades and fame than cricketers simply because of the success they achieve without the proper guidance and still manage to make the country proud.

‘Guru Bina gati nahi’

“We cricketers do not credit our coaches as much as other sportsmen do, maybe because when you start playing for the country, the cricketers forget their coaches because they don’t get to meet and speak a lot but in other sports they need their coaches from the start till the end and the coaches also spend a lot of time,” Sehwag was quoted as saying by Hindustan Times.

This time, however, Sehwag seemingly uttered something that didn’t sit well with Harbhajan Singh, who is known for speaking his mind and he tweeted, “Don’t agree to this.. maybe few individuals they don’t give credit to their coaches but few of them they don’t move anywhere without them..guru Bina gati nahi”.

Harbhajan Singh mentioned that one cannot go anywhere or get any momentum unless your teacher (or coach in this context) is there to guide you. With coaches in cricket also getting their due, the Punjab off-spinner’s words remain true in every sense.
