All the eight existing Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise would be busy brainstorming with the deadline of submission of the retention list approaching. All the teams, excluding the two new franchise, have been asked to submit their list of retained players by November 30. With a mega auction taking place ahead of IPL 2022, each franchise can retain only a maximum of four players.
Hence, many sides are set to go under a revamp. While selecting the retained players might have been easy for some franchise, several would face the problem of plenty. Chennai Super Kings (CSK) definitely belong to the latter category. Having won the 2021 edition, CSK would like to form a formidable squad. However, it would be interesting to see how they approach and retention and auction event.
With several T20 stalwarts being in the ranks, CSK might have a tough time while finalizing the retained players. Meanwhile, Faf du Plessis has expressed desires of extending his association with the four-time IPL champions. Replying to a fan on Instagram, the former South African captain said he would like to play for CSK in the future. However, he also admitted being in CSK is not in his hands.
That’s not my decision: Faf du Plessis on continuing association with CSK
“Haha that’s not my decision. I also hope I get back there,” wrote Du Plessis in reply after a fan urged him to stay with CSK for the next season. The fan shared the Instagram chat on social media and the screenshot went viral in no time. Now, only time would tell if the fan’s wish would come true or not.

It has to be noted that a franchise can retain a maximum of just two foreign players. With the Proteas dasher being 37 and in the twilight of his professional career, many believe CSK won’t retain him but might instead try to get him in the auction. After all, the right-handed batter has been a vital cog of the franchise ever since joining the team in 2011.
In fact, he was IPL 2021’s second-highest run-scorer with 633 runs, only two behind his opening partner Ruturaj Gaikwad. Hence, Du Plessis might go for bonkers if he lands in the bidding event.
