'I would've been a soldier' - Rovman Powell reveals what he would've become if not a cricketer

Delhi Capitals’ all-rounder Rovman Powell has opened up about his journey, and how he walked towards the path of cricket coming from a poor background. Powell revealed his childhood dream of getting his family out of poverty and also said that he would have been a soldier if cricket had not worked out for him.

Powell has been a core member of the Capitals’ squad and has emerged as the team’s lower-order power-hitter in the IPL 2022. He has played some wonderful knocks in the tournament so far and the team has depended upon him during tense situations of the game.

In the recent episode of the Delhi Capitals’ podcast, Powell shared an emotional story about his background as he said: “I come from a small village (in Jamaica) where farming is the primary income for the majority of the families. But from my childhood days, I had a dream that I will take my family out of poverty through cricket and education.”

“Cricket has been going well, thanks to the grace of God. Before I became a professional cricketer, I was going to become a soldier. If cricket didn’t work out then I would have been a soldier,” he added.

The power-hitter also talked about his time with the franchise and said that he has been treated at home. Rovman Powell emphasized the importance of a good team environment for a player and revealed how it can play a crucial role in the cricketer’s game.

“Coming all the way from the Caribbean, it was very important for me to come here and feel at home. And the Delhi Capitals have accepted me as a part of their family and I feel at home here. Being comfortable in an environment can help you put up your best performances. And I realized that everyone in the team is behind you whether you have a good day or not and that is very important,” he further stated.

Powell also praised the team’s skipper Rishabh Pant as he said that he has been very nice and supportive of him since the first day, and revealed that the Caribbean players look up to him because he is a good player.
