It is always difficult to score a ton in T20 format but there are certain players in the world who can score a ton in any format at their will due to their extraordinary hitting abilities. Actually in T20I format, there were 17 centuries score by different batsmen and that is an achievement. If one batsman scores a century for his team and we always think that his team should win that game and even if other team’s player also scores a ton then it is possible but there have not been any instance when in a T20I match two batsmen from different teams have scored a ton. However, there are four instances in T20I when team’s batsman had scored a ton and that team actually lost the match and recently we saw that in Sydney when Shane Watson’s magnificent ton went in vain as India won the match by 7 wickets and won the series by 3-0.

Here we have presented those instances when T20I centuries from different batsmen came in a losing cause.

1. Chris Gayle’s 117 against South Africa

It was the first match of the ICC World Cup of 2007 and overall it was 20th T20I match in which South Africa had won the toss and put West Indies into bat first. While batting first, West Indies openers named Chris Gayle and D Smith had managed to put up a partnership of 145 runs and after Smith’s wicket other batsmen had failed to contribute barring Gayle and who smashed a ton and set the tournament on his own and West Indies had posted a total of 205 against South Africa.

It was not common to chase a target of above 200 in 2007 in T20I match but with combined effort of H Gibbs and Justin Kemp, South Africa had chased the target in just 17.4 overs and Chris Gayle’s 117 which came from 75 balls with 10 sixes went in vain and that proved cricket is a team game because it is not possible to win every match with an individual’s heroics.
