The Kolkata Knight Riders thought they were in a happy place after they had posted 178/7 in their 20 overs in the 7th match of the season. Manish Pandey had scored an unbeaten 81 off 47 deliveries with 5 fours and 5 sixes to help the team reach the total. Mumbai got off to a flying start with Jos Buttler and Parthiv Patel going great guns. However, a middle-order slump saw the run rate going down. Nitish Rana saw wickets tumbling from the other end as he stood his ground. Towards the end, 61 runs were needed off 23 balls when Kieron Pollard was dismissed on 17.

In walked Hardik Pandya to join Rana at the crease. 11 runs came off the 17th over bowled by Chris Woakes. 50 off three looked like a big task. Rana spanked a six and a four which was backed by another six from Pandya in the over bowled by Trent Boult. 30 in two overs would have been tough but Ankit Rajpoot gave away 19 runs despite dismissing Rana for 50 off 29 deliveries in the penultimate over. Hardik finished off the proceedings with an unbeaten 29 off just 11 balls with 3 fours and 2 sixes.
