Chennai Super Kings (CSK), the defending champions, made a stupendous start to this Indian Premier League (IPL). The franchise has now won three matches in a row and are now at the top of the points table. After getting the better of RCB and DC, the team, captained by MS Dhoni, managed to beat the Rajasthan Royals (RR) by eight runs at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.

Dhoni comes to the party

After the Royals won the toss and opted to field and got the CSK batting under pressure with some early wickets. Jofra Archer nipped out opener Ambati Rayudu after which Ben Stokes accounted for the prized wicket of Shane Watson. Jaydev Unadkat added to the wickets column as he dismissed Kedar Jadhav, who hit two fours and then got out. Thereafter, MS Dhoni and Suresh Raina steadied the ship.

The duo added 61 for the fourth wicket and set the platform for a final flourish. Unadkat cleaned up Raina, who scored a 32-ball 36, to break the ominous-looking partnership. It was then the turn of Dhoni to put the foot down the peddle and up the ante. He notched his half-century in 39 balls and remained not out on 75 runs from 46 balls Dwayne Bravo chipped in with 27 runs and CSK ended with 175.

CSK get home yet again

Rajasthan started the run-chase in a rather jittery manner as even they lost three early wickets in the form of Ajinkya Rahane, Jos Buttler and Sanju Samson, who had scores of 0, 6 and 8 respectively. Rahul Tripathi and Steve Smith put their heads down and stitched together a useful stand of 61 runs in 41 balls. Imran Tahir removed Tripathi after the batsman racked up 39 runs from 24 deliveries.

Steve Smith perished after a struggling 28 from 30. Ben Stokes took charge and played some decent strokes to keep the Royals in the hunt. However, CSK got rid of the big fish in the last over of the game. Dwayne Bravo nipped him out for 46. Jofra Archer threw his bat away to score 24 from 11 balls, but his efforts went in vain. Dwayne Bravo held his nerve and defended 12 runs in the last over.
