Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) and Gujarat Titans (GT) locked horns in the 21st game of IPL 2022 at the Dr DY Patil Sports Academy in Navi Mumbai. The former had opened their account in the previous game, defeating Chennai Super Kings (CSK) by eight wickets, whereas the latter were unbeaten in the tournament, with three victories in their bag.

Kane Williamson opted to chase in the game as the Hardik Pandya-led side opened with the bat, and both the teams started the play remaining unchanged. The very first over of SRH’s spell by Bhuvneshwar Kumar proved to be very expensive as he conceded 17 runs off the over, most accounting for wides. But he came back strongly to dismiss Shubman Gill in the third over.

GT’s top order was dismissed within the first 10 overs as the batters struggled to score. A 50* (42) by skipper Pandya and a quick 35 (21) by Abhinav Manohar helped GT steady the innings as they ended up posting 162/7 on the board. Kumar and T Natarajan picked up two wickets each, followed by Marco Jansen and Umran Malik adding one each to their cap.

Rahul Tripathi retired hurt, but SRH covered the game up brilliantly

Speaking of the chase, SRH openers Abhishek Sharma and Williamson added 64 runs for the first wicket partnership, before the former was dismissed by Rashid Khan late in the ninth over. Sharma continued to display the form that he had against CSK in his previous game, and scored 42 (32) before walking off.

Rahul Tripathi did a splendid job but lost his balance after hitting a six and fell to the ground, hurting his hamstring in the process. As a result, he had to walk back retired hurt as Nicholas Pooran replaced him. The game slowed down a bit after Sharma’s dismissal, but the skipper’s composed knock of 57 (46) held the innings tight.

Pooran filled in the void created by Tripathi and led the batting attack from the front after Williamson’s dismissal, and led the team to complete the chase. SRH won the game by eight wickets with five balls to spare, as they marked their second victory of the season. GT were handed the first defeat as SRH broke their three-match winning streak.
