The Lucknow Super Giants got the better of Delhi Capitals by six runs in Match 45 of IPL 2022 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on May 1. By virtue of this win, LSG have now jumped to the second spot in the points table with seven victories from 10 games and 14 points to their tally.

Lucknow skipper KL Rahul won the toss and elected to bat first. He along with wicketkeeper-batter Quinton de Kock added 42 runs for the opening stand before the latter was dismissed. Rahul continued to go after the Delhi bowlers and was also involved in a 95-run stand for the second wicket with Deepak Hooda. The captain scored 77 runs from 51 deliveries while Hooda contributed with a 34-ball 52 that powered LSG to a stiff total of 195/3.

So near yet so far for DC

In reply, DC lost their openers Prithvi Shaw and David Warner early before Mitchell Marsh (37) and skipper Rishabh Pant (44) stitched a small partnership to keep Delhi in the hunt. The LSG bowlers delivered vital blows as they ran through Delhi’s middle-order and after Pant was castled, it appeared as if the margin of defeat would be very high for DC.

However, Rovman Powell (35) and Axar Patel (42*) brought the deficit down but the steep asking rate meant that they could not get the job done for their side.

Losing skipper, Rishabh Pant said:

I think it’s hard (loss), but we have to start winning close matches. We came close few games but we are losing it. Really happy that the bowlers pulled it back. But on these kind of wickets when the bowlers put up a helping hand, we got to perform as a batting unit as well. It was really nice to see the way Mitch (Marsh) was batting. But as a batting unit we need to start converting those 30s, 40s into a big score. Hopefully we can turn it around. As a team there are a lot of positives and there is not much to discuss but we would like to improve ourselves in the next game.

Winning skipper, KL Rahul said:

Really not thinking about that (playoffs), we’ve played some good cricket. Happy with the way we are doing the right things, just gives us confidence and we need to come out every game and give it our 100%, that’s what we are trying to do. He (Mohsin Khan) has been brilliant, played him in the nets first time a month ago … didn’t want to face him, seriously.

He was sharp, he’s scary at times in the nets. It’s not just the pace, he has a good brain, has a bit of skill as well, has a great slower one and he knows when to use them. Eager to learn, eager to play, obviously he’s been around with the teams for the last 2-3 years, he hasn’t got a chance, he was very eager to play and he’s been a confident guy. Even under pressure, he’s bowled some really big overs for us and he’s performed for us. Hopefully he can learn, get better, get confident and keep doing the job for us.
