On the back of England batter Jos Buttler’s hundred, Rajasthan Royals (RR) cruised to victory in their group stage match against the Delhi Capitals (DC) played at the iconic Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai on April 22 (Friday). Jos Buttler was adjudged the Player of the Match for his third hundred in the tournament.
DC skipper Rishabh Pant won the toss and opted to have a field first. However, RR openers Buttler and Devdutt Padikkal stitched an excellent partnership of 155 runs for the first wicket. Padikkal also managed to get some runs under his name and score his first half-century of the season. The left-handed batter scored a 35-ball 54 before being dismissed by Khaleel Ahmed in the 16th over.
After getting to his century, the English batter did not show any slow down and carried on with his momentum in the death overs. Buttler added 47 runs for the second wicket along with captain Sanju Samson before eventually being dismissed by Bangladeshi pacer Mustafizur Rahman on the final delivery of the 19th over.
Jos Buttler scored 116 runs from 65 balls including nine fours and as many sixes at a strike rate of 178.5 that powered the Royals to a huge score of 222/2. For DC, Khaleel Ahmed and Mustafizur scalped one wicket each.
DC put up a good fight in their chase
Chasing 223, DC openers came all guns blazing with David Warner (28 off 14 balls), and Prithvi Shaw (37 off 27 balls) playing some delightful shots. However, they could not last for long. Skipper Rishabh Pant (44 off 24 balls), Lalit Yadav (37 off 24 balls), and Roman Powell (36 off 15 balls) tried to pull back DC into the contest, but that was too much for the DC batters.
After winning tonight’s match, RR have gone back to the top of the points table with five wins. Gujarat Titans (second), Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) complete the top four teams in the points table. Meanwhile, DC after losing tonight’s match found themselves placed in the sixth spot.
