Joe Root hit back at the critics in style with back-to-back centuries against India in the recently concluded ODI series. England‘s best batsman stepped up to the task when it mattered the most and single-handedly won them the two matches after losing the first game of the series. However, what grabbed the eyeballs was Root’s celebration after reaching his 13th ton in the ODIs as Headingley.

He looked assured in his footwork after being flummoxed by the wrist-spinners in the T20Is and the first One-Dat International at the Trent Bridge. His innings at Lord’s defined England’s score of 322 runs. He dropped anchor from one end and kept the Indian bowlers at bay which worked in favour of the other batsmen perfectly. The spinners, especially Kuldeep Yadav were tackled perfectly and finally, the hosts got the better of him in the decider as he went wicketless.

I regretted it immediately

Joe Root reached his record 13th century after thumping the full toss from Hardik Pandya and celebrated it in a unique way. He held his arm straight out and let go of his bat to mark his milestone, mimicking an on-stage performer who exactly does the same by dropping the microphone after finishing his act.

In a recent media interaction though he has admitted having been embarrassed over his celebration almost immediately after doing it. “It was something that I immediately regretted. I’ve not heard the end of it, it was literally the most embarrassing thing I’ve done on a cricket field,” he was quoted as saying by Daily Mail.

His teammates have also pulled his leg over the same and England’s Test captain has admitted to some friendly abuse from them as well. “I don’t think it will be the last I hear of it from the group – they’ve been hammering me. You’d think if you were going to do a celebration like that, you’d have smacked it 30 yards out of the ground. It was just an absolute car crash,” Root added.
