The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) introduced the yo-yo test earlier in order to make fitness an integral element of a cricketer’s career. The decision has definitely not panned out well for a few cricketers. Mohammed Shami drooped in the exam, owing to which Navdeep Saini replaced him in the historic Test versus Afghanistan in Bangalore.

Sanju Samson, one of India’s brightest young wicketkeepers, failed the test and was replaced by Ishan Kishan in the India A’s ongoing tour of England. Ambati Rayudu, who was phenomenal in the IPL, was drafted in for the senior team’s limited overs series. However, he was also sidelined because of the somewhat ‘cursed’ examination for the players.

“A player may not be mentally there”- Sandeep Patil

Suresh Raina reaped fruits from the omission as he staked his claim back in the ODI setup after a gap of three years. Meanwhile, Sandeep Patil, the former Indian cricketer, has called for the test to be conducted twice in order to provide the players a second chance as well. The veteran also put forth the example of two innings in a Test match to justify his point.

“Like in Test cricket, where a player is given two innings to prove himself, even in the case of Yo-Yo tests, he should be given two chances. If a player isn’t able to clear the test, give him another crack at it a few hours later, or the next day. There could be many reasons why Ambati Rayudu failed the Yo-Yo test that day,” Patil was quoted as saying by The Times of India (TOI).

A player may not be mentally there. You’re talking about the career of a player. He has performed well for the whole year in domestic cricket, and in half-an-hour, you’ll decide whether he’d go on the tour or not. You don’t drop players like this,” he added.
