Shreyas Iyer experienced a sensational start to his Test career against the New Zealand side in Kanpur. The right-handed batter scored a century in the 1st innings and followed that up with a classy 65 in the second.

And, Iyer was picked in the Indian Test squad for the challenging tour to South Africa. And, the President of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Sourav Ganguly has heaped praises on Iyer.

Ganguly stated that Iyer has been averaging over 50 in first-class cricket for almost a decade, and an ordinary batter cannot do that. Ganguly further opined that a player needs to be provided with an opportunity to express his talent at the national level.

“I think he averages 50 in First Class cricket for a long period of time. I saw his First Class average, he was averaging 52 for a period of 10 years, and you can’t be ordinary to do that. At some stage you need an opportunity to show your talent at the international level,” said Ganguly on the show Backstage with Boria.

Hopefully Shreyas Iyer will deliver in South Africa: Sourav Ganguly

Sourav Ganguly also added that Iyer’s real test will be when he visits the South African shores, as there will be a lot of pace and bounce in the surfaces there. The BCCI President concluded by stating that he hopes that Iyer will stand up to the challenge and perform well.

“I am extremely happy that he did well in his first Test, but his real test will come when he goes to South Africa. When he goes to South Africa and England, with the pace and bounce, hopefully he will stand up and deliver,” concluded Sourav Ganguly.

The 1st Test match between India and South Africa will begin on 26th December 2021 and will be played at Centurion.
