Mumbai Indians took on Sunrisers Hyderabad in Match 8 of the Indian Premier League 2024 at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad on March 27. MI won the toss and decided to bat first on a pitch conducive to batting. SRH were off to a great start as Travis Head unleashed mayhem. He particularly took the debutant Kwena Maphaka to cleaners, scoring 22 runs off his second over. SRH accumulated 81 runs in the powerplay.

Later Abhishek Sharma took the mantle of scoring at a brisk rate, he hammered three sixes off veteran Piyush Chawla’s first over and kept the scoreboard in check. The southpaw then took on Kwena Maphaka and fetched Gerald Coetzee and fetched 23 runs off his over. His 23-ball 63 came to a halt as Chawla finally outsmarted the Punjab-born by dragging the ball short.

Heinrich Klaasen and Aiden Markram made the Mumbai bowlers pay for any loose balls, and there was no dry land as boundaries were scored all around the park. Klaasen in particular scored 80 runs off 34 deliveries and with the help of Markram’s 28-ball 42, SRH posted 277 for 4, the highest total ever in IPL’s history.

Mumbai Indians falter in historic chase

MI’s chase was off to a rapid start as Ishan Kishan and Rohit Sharma were at their elemental best. Kishan was hitting sixes for fun and Rohit was complementing him well. However, the pocket dynamo was dismissed while he was batting at 34 and Rohit followed suit, contributing 26. Naman Dhir and Tilak Verma saw through the middle overs, but MI needed some miracle to climb the mountain. Dhir scored 30 and Verma too could not stay till the end as he departed for 64 runs.

Hardik Pandya was expected to come all guns blazing as the situation was tailor-made for him, but other than a few boundaries here and there he could not create an impact. The Mumbai skipper walked back, scoring 24 runs, as Tim David and Impact Substitute Romario Shepherd were left to achieve the never-ever feat. The final over demanded 47 runs, but the opposition could only muster 15 runs as the hosts won the match by 31 runs.
