Sourav Ganguly backs Yuvraj Singh to succeed in England series

Former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly believes that comeback-man Yuvraj Singh will have a good time in the upcoming England series. The Indian squad for the ODIs and T20Is against England was announced on Friday. One of the surprise inclusions was that of left-handed veteran batsman Yuvraj Singh. Yuvraj had last played for India in the ICC World T20 2016 against Australia.

His last appearance in the ODIs for the Indian colours was back in 2013. Hence, the comeback in the England series is quite an achievement for the 34-year old. Make no mistake, Yuvraj Singh had put in giant strides and efforts to get back to fitness and earned the recall in the national setup.

In the Ranji Trophy this season, he plundered over 650 runs for Punjab at an average over 80. With two tons and two fifties, he had a top score of 260. The statement was made and the selectors surely caught the number. Now, speaking to the Indian Express, former skipper Sourav Ganguly affirmed that Yuvraj’s selection was a justified call and he backed him to be among the runs this series.

“It’s a great thing he (Yuvraj) has been included in both the formats. I’m confident he will get some runs and succeed,” quoted Sourav Ganguly.

Ganguly, one of the most successful Indian captains, also spoke on Virat Kohli being named as the Indian skipper. MS Dhoni recently stepped down as the limited overs skipper of the Indian team. Ganguly feels that Kohli is the ideal man to replace MS Dhoni. He also backed Kohli to do a job as good as MS Dhoni did during his tenure.

“He is the right successor (to Dhoni) in one-day Internationals and T20Is. He will be equally fantastic, there’s no doubt about that,” quoted the former Indian captain.

India is scheduled to play 3 ODIs and 3 T20Is against England starting from January 15.
