The host team suffered a crucial blow in the series, as their premier fast bowler Dale Steyn got injured during the first Test match and was subsequently ruled out of the three-match competition. The sudden injury provided a big opportunity to another quick bowler Lungisani Ngidi in the second Test match. He was able to pick up a single wicket in the first innings. But then showed his lightning colors with a match-winning spell in the form of picking up a massive tally of six wickets in the second innings of his maiden Test match.

Ngidi picked up 9 wickets in the two games he played in the three-match Test series. And then after an absorbing run in the longest format, he was granted an ODI debut in the third match of the limited overs series. He remained wicket-less in his maiden encounter. The quickie, however, came to the party in the fifth ODI match by picking up four wickets, which was his favorable outing in this format. The debutant scalped 8 wickets in the four matches and emerged as the highest wicket-taker for his team in the six-match series.
