The South African team was dented with consistent bewildering injury blows in the limited overs series as de Villiers was ruled out of the first three ODI matches, then to skipper Faf du Plessis and Quinton de Kock was also forced to pull out of the series due to injuries. However the injuries, then gave chances to some young talented players to show their capability and one of those openings happened for Khaya Zondo, who played the second one-day international match as his maiden game. After a long wait to get the first break in international cricket, Zondo scored only 25 runs in his first match. Even though on a lighter day, Zondo looked quite comfortable in his short stay at the crease facing the two Indian wrist spinners, Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav, who created a lot of trouble for the other batters of his team.

He then followed with a dismal performance in the next match, after which he was also dropped for the next two games of the series. After having lost the series, Zondo once again got the chance to be part of the playing XI in the final ODI match.  The batsman then played a splendid knock in which he compiled 54 runs, notching up his maiden half-century and also recorded the highest score for the South African team in that losing final match. He scored 96 runs in the three games featuring him in the  ODI series.
