Former South African U19 bowler Mondli Khumalo is in a state of coma after being assaulted outside a pub in Bridgwater in Bristol on May 28. According to reports, Khumalo’s condition is serious, having suffered bleeding on the brain for which he also had to undergo two surgeries. Meanwhile, a 27-year-old man, who was allegedly involved in the incident, has been arrested.

Khumalo is yet to achieve fame and fortune at the highest level for the Proteas. He was a member of the South African squad in the 2020 edition of the ICC U-19 World Cup. After the tournament, he made four first-class appearances and received a high-performance contract from Kwa-Zulu Natal Inland for the ongoing 2022-2023 season.

Mondli is such a gentle guy: Khumalo’s agent

“Mondli is such a gentle guy. His mom just can’t understand how something like this could have happened to him,” Rob Humphries told ESPNcricinfo.

“And everyone at North Petherton just adores him. He is a genuinely lovely kid. He was having a really good time here. He had bowled really well and he had become such a wonderful part of the club,” he added.

Rob Humphries is Mondli Khumalo’s agent. The report further states that both Humphries and North Petherton Cricket Club are working out to help the injured cricketer’s family, especially his mother in getting a passport so that she can fly down to the United Kingdom to be with her son.

Khumalo was representing North Petherton Cricket Club on his first overseas stint as a professional. It so happened that the team was celebrating their well-deserved win last weekend and that is when the unfortunate incident took place. Even though all his medical expenses have been covered, it cannot be said whether he would need any further treatment. Therefore, his club North Petherton Cricket Club has come forward to set up a crowdfunding page for further assistance.
