Pakistan may have come into the Tri-nation series back of seven consecutive wins and eight consecutive series wins in the T20I format but had lost their last five ODI matches before they landed in Zimbabwe. The winners of the Champions Trophy 2017 were whitewashed in the 5-match ODI series in New Zealand at the start of 2018. The Asian side opened their wins account in ODI format in 2018 with a resounding 201-run win in the first of the 5-match ODI series against Zimbabwe.

After losing the toss, Pakistan dealt with some tight bowling from the host pacers. Young opener Imam-ul-Haq was beaten multiple times in the mandatory powerplay but survived to score a big knock. Another opener Fakhar Zaman scored a 70-ball 60 carrying his form before getting out. Imam scored his 2nd century in only his 5th ODI game as he made 128 off 134 balls with 11 boundaries. Contributions from the middle order batsmen helped the visitors to finish on 308/7 in their 50 overs.
