Veteran batsman Wasim Jaffer is ageing like fine wine. At a time when a majority of the cricketers enjoy their life after cricket, the domestic cricket stalwart is churning out runs on a consistent basis. Jaffer has not looked back since he signed up to play for Vidarbha in 2015 after ending his two-decade long association with Mumbai. Last season, he played an important role in Vidarbha’s fairytale triumphant Ranji Trophy-campaign. His monumental 286-run knock then helped Vidarbha beat Rest of India and win the Irani Cup.

Jaffer has been in sensational form this season too. On Thursday, he scored a stunning double-century in the quarterfinal to all but ensure the defending champions’ passage to the semifinals. Jaffer scored 206 runs from 296 balls and stitched a 304-run stand for the second wicket with centurion Sanjay Ramasamy to help Vidarbha take the crucial first-innings lead against Uttarakhand, who had posted 355 in their first innings. At the end of day three, Vidarbha were 559 for 6, leading Uttarakhand by 204 runs. With a huge first innings lead and just one day remaining, the reigning champions look set to enter the semi-final.

In doing so, Jaffer became the first Indian and the first Asian batsman to score two double centuries in first-class cricket after crossing the age of 40. The right-hander’s double century in Irani Cup was his first at the age of 40. His latest double ton was the ninth instance of him crossing the 200-run mark in first-class cricket. Jaffer, who is the highest scorer in the history of Ranji Trophy, also has two triple centuries against his name at the domestic level.

The former India Test opener is showing no signs of stopping this season. In nine matches so far, the former Mumbai star has already amassed 969 runs, including four hundreds and a two half-centuries, at an average of 80.75.

Meanwhile, the cricketing fratnerity was quick to wish the veteran star for his epic knock. Here are some of the messages:
