Trinbago Knight Riders, on Tuesday, beat the Saint Lucia Kings by 27 runs at the Warner Park in St Kitts. Andre Fletcher tried valiantly with an unbeaten 55-ball 81, but his knock went in vain. Even as the Knights moved to second in the table, the Kings kept languishing at the bottom.

Pollard and Seifert rescue TKR

TKR got off to a jittery start as they found themselves at 68 for four in 11.5 overs. Lendl Simmons and Sunil Narine, the two openers, managed only 35 runs off 45 balls. Tion Webster started with two fours before he holed out to deep mid-wicket off Roston Chase.

However, Kieron Pollard and Tim Seifert’s 78-run stand for the fifth wicket took the Knight Riders to 158 for seven. Pollard scored a 29-ball 41 even as Seifert notched a 25-ball 37. For the Kings, Kesrick Williams was the most successful as he picked up four wickets.

Fletcher’s valiant efforts in vain

In the run-chase, it was Fletcher against the TKR bowlers. He stayed until the very end, but he didn’t get much support from the others. For the Kings, Isuru Udana struck first blood as he picked up Rahkeem Cornwall. Faf du Plessis started with a four, but his 14 came at a strike rate of 58.33.

Roston Chase and Tim David, the Kings’ in-form batters, couldn’t open their accounts. Tim Deyal looked good for a brief while before Ravi Rampaul castled him. Rampaul went on to pick up three wickets. The Kings could only get up to 131 in 20 overs.

We lost it with the ball at the end, says Faf du Plessis

After the win, Pollard said that his partnership with Seifert was crucial in the context of the game. Du Plessis, the Kings’ skipper, admitted that his team leaked away too many runs in the death overs.

“Sometimes you have to take the initiative, I knew if I came up, they will bring back their main bowlers. It’s about capitalising on those things. He’s confident after a 16-ball 40 in the last game [on Tim Seifert] was good to bat with him, that partnership with him provided the momentum and Ramdin at the end finished it off with a six,” Pollard was quoted as saying.

“We lost it with the ball at the end. 20 too much on that wicket. It’s not easy batting, especially against the spinners. Polly hung in there and he got the bowling at the end to capitalize. We were looking for a similar blueprint. They also showed us how to execute better at the end with the ball. Great character from Williams with the ball,” Du Plessis said.
