Mohammed Shami has been named as the replacement to Jasprit Bumrah in team India’s squad for the forthcoming T20 World Cup 2022. India did not seem to have a potent bowling attack as Bumrah has been out of the equation due to a back injury he endured. However, the pacer was still in contention to get back to the squad just in time for the mega event but was eventually kept out as he was unable to recover in time.
Shami was initially named in the standby list for team India’s T20 World Cup squad. Now, with the speedster out injured and, in the sidelines, the doors have opened wide for Shami to be included in the squad.
Shami left for Australia recently
Deepak Chahar and Shami were the two most likely frontrunners to take over the vacant spot left by Bumrah. However, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) officially named veteran pacer Shami as the replacement while Chahar also got ruled out of the action.
"The All-India Senior Selection Committee has named Mohammed Shami as Jasprit Bumrah's replacement in India's ICC Men's T20 World Cup squad. Shami has reached Australia and will link up with the squad in Brisbane ahead of the warm-up matches," the BCCI wrote in a press release on Friday.
With the inclusion of the veteran pacer in the national side, the fast-bowling line-up now includes Shami, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Harshal Patel, and Arshdeep Singh. Rohit Sharma-led team India are set to kick off their World Cup campaign on October 23 with a match against arch-rivals Pakistan. On the other hand, Mohammed Siraj and Shardul Thakur have been named in the standby players' list.
Death overs has been one aspect that the side will need to fix as swiftly as possible, however, the experience of Shami in the big matches will certainly help. The Men in Blue will look to seek redemption against Pakistan by maintaining momentum throughout the marquee tournament in order to clinch the coveted title.
Here's how Twitter reaction to Shami making it to the squad:
Good call, watching this Australia v England series, little bit of rain and Woakes is swinging the ball so nicely, Shami is our best seam bowler by far, we could use his 4 overs upfront with Arshdeep bowling all 4 in death

Good move Shami can be a better seamer in Australian bounce tracks !!! Though still bowling in death overs is a concern

Great great decision I guess, his speed and his experience in Australia gives him that confidence, and yes he is not playing t20is since 2021 but a like to like replacement of bumrah,so management saw his potential for this tournament. I wish he will be the key factor for us in WC
