Royal Challengers Bangalore and Delhi Capitals crossed swords in the seventh match of the ongoing Women's Premier League (WPL) 2024 on Thursday, February 29, at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. The Capitals won by 25 runs in a high-scoring affair.

Smriti Mandhana won the toss and opted to field first. Meg Lanning couldn't get going as she only scored 11 off 17 deliveries. However, when Shafali Verma and Alice Capsey joined forces, Delhi got some much-needed momentum into their innings. The exuberant youngsters stitched an enterprising 82-run partnership to set a solid platform for the Capitals.

Shafali departed soon after scoring her half-century and the exciting Jemimah Rodrigues fell for a duck as Bangalore picked up two wickets in quick succession against the run of play. Capsey was also dismissed soon after and Delhi needed a partnership to help them finish strong.

Jess Jonassen and Marizanne Kapp added 48 runs off 22 balls to give Delhi the acceleration they needed. Arundhati Reddy chipped in with a couple of boundaries in the last over as Delhi finished with a score of 194/5, the second-highest in the history of the tournament.

In reply, Smriti led the charge for Bangalore. Her breathtaking knock of 74 off 43 balls kept her team in the hunt. However, she didn't get much support from the other end. Sophie Devine hit a couple of sixes and so did Richa Ghosh but they couldn't capitalise on their starts.

Sabbhineni Meghana couldn't up the ante through the middle overs and eventually departed after scoring 36 off 31 balls. From 164/4 in 18.2 overs, Bangalore finished at 169/9, giving Delhi a 25-run victory. Jonassen was the pick of the bowlers as she bagged a three-for, while Kapp and Reddy picked up two wickets each. Shikha Pandey also chipped in with a wicket.

Letโ€™s take a look at the highlights from Match 7 of WPL 2024:

1. Shafali Verma and Alice Capsey light up Chinnaswamy

When Alice Capsey joined Shafali Verma, Delhi had scored only 28 runs in 4.5 overs. The duo took the Bangalore bowlers to the cleaners and added 82 runs off just 43 deliveries. Shafali hit three fours and four sixes during her innings of 50 off 31 balls. Meanwhile, Capsey's 46-run knock off 33 balls comprised four fours and two sixes. It was a treat to watch the two youngsters in full flow.

2. Smriti Mandhana takes the fight to the Capitals

Smriti entertained the home crowd with her exhilarating knock under pressure. The experienced campaigner spared no bowler during her innings was 74 off 43 balls, which was studded with ten fours and three sixes. Till Smriti was there at the crease, the Bangalore fans had their hopes alive.

3. Marizanne Kapp provides the game-changing breakthrough

Marizanne Kapp, who picked up three wickets and conceded just five runs in Delhi's last game against UP Warriorz, wasn't having a great game with the ball. After conceding 14 runs off the first five balls of her third over, the South African all-rounder bowled a slower delivery that sneaked past Mandhana's swinging blade to dislodge the stumps. This turned out to be the turning point of the match as RCB were going strong until that point, having got to 112/1 inside the first 12 overs.
