Melbourne Renegades, who started this year’s Big Bash League (BBL) with resounding wins against Scorchers and Strikers’, tasted their first defeat against Sydney Sixers by 33 runs at Docklands Stadium in Melbourne. The Sixers, led by all-rounder Moises Henriques, were placed in the second-last position of the points table and the stupendous victory would come as a massive boost for the franchise.

Sixers crumble perilously

After winning the toss and opting to bowl first, the Renegades restricted the Sixers to 132 in 20 overs. Pakistan left-arm speedster nipped out Jack Edwards to strike first blood. Even as Daniel Hughes fell prey to Jack Wildermuth, Kane Richardson accounted for the wicket of Joe Denly, Edward’s fellow opening batsman. Thereafter, skipper Henriques and Jordan Silk tried to inject momentum into the innings.

Windermuth broke the ominous-looking 38-run stand, castling Henriques, who notched 20 at a run-a-ball. Silk got 30 runs, but they came at less than a strike-rate of 100. He became Richardson’s second victim. In the end, Josh Phillipe and Tom Curran wafted their willows to score 20 and 23 respectively. From the Renegades’ perspective, Richardson was the pick of the bowlers with three wickets.

Renegades huff and puff

Mackenzie Harvey and Tim Ludeman got the Renegades off to a handsome start with a stand of 32 runs from 25 balls after which the hosts lost their way. Tom Curran rattled Ludeman’s woodwork to separate the duo. Sean Abbot accounted for the wicket of Cameron White. Harvey looked settled with a knock of 30 from 25 balls with four boundaries and a six. Unfortunately, off-spinner Ben Manenti picked him up.

Captain Tom Cooper perished after scoring 13 from 17 balls. Mohammad Nabi fell for eight and half the Renegades’ side was back to the hut with the score at 66 in 12.1 overs. Eventually, the Renegades couldn’t even get past the 100-run mark and ended on 99 for nine in their allotted 20 overs. While Curran got three wickets, Abbott, left-arm spinner Steve O’Keefe and Manenti racked up a couple each.
