The 2021 edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) was postponed with immediate effect a series of COVID-19 cases during the tournament. The T20 competition got underway on February 20 and since then, as many as seven cases were reported.

Back on March 1, Fawad Ahmed was tested positive for the coronavirus before the game between Islamabad United and Quetta Gladiators. The game was thereafter postponed to March 2 after initially being deferred until 9 PM on Monday.

Later it was learned that the squad members from both the camps tested negative for the ungodly virus. Fawad had shown symptoms a couple of days ago and was isolated on Saturday evening.

Roadblock for PSL 2021

“The decision to reschedule the match has been made after a careful consideration, aimed at allowing players sufficient time to relax, refocus and regroup following the testing and in the best interest of the competition,” the PSL was quoted as saying, reported by Cricbuzz.

“While all squad members of Quetta Gladiators and Islamabad United have tested negative, players and player support personnel of the four remaining sides and the match officials will undergo rapid tests on Monday evening.

“The tickets for Monday’s match will be valid on Tuesday, while the unused tickets can be refunded,” the statement added.

Back in 2020, the PSL had to be postponed for an indefinite time period before the playoffs. The rest of the four matches took place in November 2020 when Karachi Kings became the champions, beating Lahore Qalandars in the final.

For the 2021 edition, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), in an immediate step, will be focussing on the secure and safe passage of all the participants. The six participating teams would also be provided with PCR tests, vaccines, and isolation facilities.
