Adelaide Strikers and Perth Scorchers, the top two team of the ongoing Big Bash were up against each other on the day of the doubleheader.
It was an all-around effort from Ashton Agar and brilliant batting from Hilton Cartwright after getting respite due to no-ball that helped them go top of the ladder. Earlier the Strikers’ collapse in the later part of the innings meant that they could only manage 112 runs.
Scorchers, one of the best bowling attack side in the BBL, opted to bowl first after winning the toss. The openers started cautiously for the Strikers as they hit just 3 boundaries in the first 5 overs of the powerplay. Alex Carey has been in a great nick throughout the tournament for the hosts and he didn’t disappoint in this game as well. He hit a couple of sixes for them in the last two overs of the powerplay to get the momentum going for the Strikers.
After the powerplay, the visitors unleashed the spin attack. William Bosisto pinned down Jake Weatherald on the second ball of his over to give the side first breakthrough. Agar from the other end sent Collin Ingram packing in his first over. Spinners tied down the runs from both the ends. Carey along with Jonathan Wells was repairing the rupture caused by the spinners but a misjudged run caused them the wicket as a flying Cameron Bancroft disturbed the stumps.
Carey’s wicket in the same over triggered the collapse of the Strikers. They were 79 for 2 after the 11 overs and were eventually bowled out in the last over as Tim Bresnan picked his second wicket of the game. Matthew Kelly scalped two while Ashton Agar returned with the figures of 3-19 in his 4 overs. Strikers lost their last 8 wickets for 33 runs and eventually could only manage 112 runs in 19.2 overs.
Scorchers stroll home
The hot and humid conditions were testing the players and the short run chase wasn’t going to be a cakewalk for the Scorchers.
The run chase pegged early as opener Bosisto’s attempt to clear mid-on failed and a catch from Peter Siddle sent him packing. Skipper Michael Klinger‘s short inning of 17 came to halt when Laughlin held on to a brilliant catch. 2 wickets in 3 balls saw the chase getting scattered when Siddle got the wicket of set Bancroft while Rashid disturbed the woodwork of in-form Ashton Turner with a ripping googly to keep his side in the game.
Hilton Cartwright and Ashton Agar then with an unbeaten 70-run stand took the side towards the victory as they sit at the top of the table now. A 16-run Siddle over where Cartwright hit two sixes helped them get closer to the Strikers’ total.
Here’s how Twitter reacted during the game:
The Perth Scorchers benefitted from batting second on an unfamiliar pitch. Chasing a small total they attacked 50% of deliveries compared to Adelaide Strikers' 69% & they played notably straighter. As a result their control percentage was 89% compared to the Strikers' 81%. #BBL07 pic.twitter.com/wk6pfDrrcj

If Perth gets a home Semi final, it will be held in new Perth Stadium!
However, Scorchers would probably love to play it at WACA where they are almost invincible. ? #BBL07— Sakun Sankalana ⚓️ (@Sakun_SD) January 13, 2018

If I were in Perth, I would get ready to book finals tickets at the new Perth Stadium. Going to sell out pretty quickly. #BBL07
