One of India’s upcoming talents, Shubman Gill was curbed from getting to his maiden international century by just two runs in the rain-interrupted third ODI against West Indies. The right-hander was recalled into the limited-overs setup after a while and he made the opportunity count, scoring two half-centuries in the three games. In fact, Gill got starts in all three games and looked the best batter on display from the Indian side.

India batted first in the final ODI, and both the openers Gill and Dhawan ensured a century stand for the first wicket to provide a big platform. Rain halted the game for a while which reduced the match to 40 overs per side and India had to up the anti straight after the rain break. Gill got to his half-century before the rain break, however, with quick runs needed, he played a lot of shots after the interruption alongside Shreyas Iyer. Iyer from the other end gave him good support as the duo stuck an 86-run partnership together for the second wicket.

Shubman Gill remains unbeaten on 98 as Rain stops play again

When Gill was nearing his century, with just two more runs needed, rain yet again showed its appearance and India’s innings were reduced to 225/3 in 36 overs. Gill remained unbeaten on 98 off 98 balls which comprised seven fours and two sixes at a strike rate of 100.

West Indies needed 257 to chase down in 35 overs, and 137 was all they could get in their 26 overs as Yuzvendra Chahal‘s four-wicket spell handed India a 119-run victory. Gill was awarded the Player of the Match for his unbeaten knock and he also won the Player-of-the-Series award for his consistent run scoring. He also scored 64 and 43 in the first two ODIs, showing a lot of maturity at the top of the order.

Gill now has six half-centuries in international cricket across the Test and ODI formats in 27 innings so far. He recently opened up on his disappointment over not converting starts into big innings, and he is expected to get to the milestone soon, given his phenomenal talent.
