Lucknow Super Giants continued their brilliant run in IPL 2023 despite losing their captain KL Rahul earlier in the tournament, as they beat Mumbai Indians by five runs in Lucknow on Tuesday, May 16. After being put in to bat first, LSG posted a good total of 177/3 on the sluggish Lucknow pitch, in their allotted 20 overs. A major role in shaping LSG's innings was played by the sensational knock that came off Marcus Stoinis, who scored 89* off 47 balls.
In reply, MI were restricted to 172/5 in their second innings as Mohsin Khan bowled a brilliant last over and defended ten runs (with 11 runs needed) for his side to help them take the game home. Following LSG’s win, Stoinis was awarded 'Player of the Match' for his incredible knock and praised Mohsin for his heroics in the final over.
"Yes, great moment for Mohsin. Injured for a year and for him to come out there and defend a total like that was great," Stoinis said at the post-match presentation.
Notably, Khan made a comeback to professional cricket in the ongoing IPL 2023 after being forced to stay away from the pitch due to a shoulder injury. He was also unable to participate in the first half of the tournament and has only played his third game so far in the season. Following his last-over heroics against MI, the left-arm seamer recalled his tough time during his injury and revealed that he had given up hopes of playing cricket again.
"It was a very tough time, and I had given up hope of playing cricket at one point because I was not able to even lift my hand, forget bowling. I was not able to straighten [my hand], my physio worked alongside me. It was medical related; it was quite scary, as the doctor had said if I was late by another month they would have had to amputate my hand. It was quite strange, my artery was blocked, my nerve was blocked," Khan told Star Sports
LSG have a great chance to finish in top two on the points table
After giving away 13 runs in his first over, Khan gave away just 13 more in his next two and finished his three-over spell with figures of 1/26, picking up the wicket of Nehal Wadhera (16 off 20).
Meanwhile, following their win against MI, LSG have maintained their third spot on the IPL points table having 15 points to their name with seven wins and a draw from 13 matches. The Krunal Pandya-led side has a great chance to finish in the top two if they manage to win their last game against Kolkata Knight Riders by a big margin and leave CSK behind on the net run rate.
