The opening day of the historic day/night Test match was completely dominated by India as they took a 68-run first-innings lead already. Bangladesh, who elected to bat first yet again, were bundled out for just 106. The senior pacer Ishant Sharma claimed a 5-wicket haul while Bangladesh were forced to make two concussion substitutes. The Indian openers couldn’t make big runs but fifties from Cheteshwar Pujara and Virat Kohli helped India to finish the day on 174/3.

All the statistical highlights from the first day of the day/night Test cricket on Indian soil:

Playing with 13 players:

13 – As many as 13 players took part in this Test match for Bangladesh as Liton Das and Nayeem Hasan suffered a concussion and were replaced by Mehidy Hasan and Taijul Islam respectively. This is the first-ever instance of a team playing with 13 different players in an International match. (Men/Women)

Surpassing opposition on the first day itself:

2 – Only the 2nd time India took a first-innings lead on the very first day of a Test match when bowling first. India finished the first day on 195/1 in the 2005 Harare Test against Zimbabwe after bowling out the hosts for 161.

Pacers dominate at the Eden Gardens again:

4 – Only the 4th time all the ten wickets in a Test inning have been picked up by the Indian pacers at home. The last such instance came during Sri Lanka’s first innings in the 2017 Test also hosted by Kolkata. The 1981 Mumbai Test against England (4th innings) and the 1983 Ahmedabad Test against West Indies (3rd innings) are the other two instances of Indian pacers claiming 10 wickets in a Test innings at home.

Another toss decision backfiring:

30.3 – Bangladesh were bowled out in only 30.3 overs after electing to bat first. These are the 2nd fewest overs a visiting side lasted in the last 85 years during the first innings after electing to bat. New Zealand were bowled out for 45 in 19.2 overs in the opening session of the 2013 Cape Town Test against South Africa after electing to bat.

A low first innings total in India:

106/10 – Bangladesh’s total of 106 is the lowest total in the first innings of a Test match in India for a visiting team. The previous lowest was 116/10 by Pakistan in the 1987 Bangalore Test match. India recorded 4 totals less than 116 in the opening innings of a home Test; all prior to 2009.

30.3 – Bangladesh were bundled in only 30.3 overs; the shortest first innings of a Test in India for a visiting team. Pakistan lasted only 49.2 overs in the first innings of the 1987 Bangalore Test where they were bowled out for 116.

A middle-order collapse:

0 – Bangladesh’s No.3, No.4 and No.5 batsmen bagged ducks during their first innings. This is only the 5th instance in Test history where No.3, No.4 and No.5 batsmen got out without scoring in the same innings and the first such instance in Asia.

Ishant’s 12-year wait:

2007 – The last and only other time when Ishant Sharma picked up a 5-wicket haul in Test cricket at home was way back in the 2007 Bangalore Test against Pakistan. Ishant recorded figures of 5/118 in the first innings of the game which was incidentally his maiden Test at home.

Kohli @ 5000:

5024 – Virat Kohli became the first Indian to complete 5000 Test runs as captain. Overall, he is the 6th player to reach this milestone and has taken the fewest number of innings (86) to get there.

Stats: Virat Kohli completes 5000 runs in Test cricket as captain

Pujara @ 15000:

15043 – Cheteshwar Pujara completed 15000 runs in first-class cricket when he got to his individual score of 12. Pujara currently averages 53.72 in FC cricket, the 3rd highest by an Indian player with 15000+ runs in this format. Only Sachin Tendulkar (57.84) and Rahul Dravid (55.33) are ahead of Pujara as on the 1st day of Kolkata Test.
