The final week of the ongoing Indian Premier League’s (IPL) league stage is here and as usual, the playoffs race has intensified. So far only the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have managed to qualify while the other three slots are still open. The match 48 will see either Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) or the Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) take one step closer to a top-four spot. It will also become tough for the loser of this game.

SRH have somehow put themselves in this situation. They started the season superbly thanks to some brilliant batting from their opening duo of Jonny Bairstow and David Warner. But the middle-order became over-reliant on them and the same problem has continued to haunt them time and again. Even against the Rajasthan Royals (RR) the other day, they were looking good to post a big total only for the middle-order to botch up the situation. They will hope to rectify these issues at the earliest as the playoff qualification beckons.

As for the KXIP, their second half of the season has been similar to last year. They looked exceptional in the first half and have tapered off as the tournament has progressed. Playing in front of the Hyderabad will not be easy for them at all and defeating SRH is tough at the venue. But they have some superstars in KL Rahul and Chris Gayle in the line-up and Ravi Ashwin will be expecting for them to step up big time now.

Pitch Report

The Hyderabad pitch has turned out to be quite slow after the first few matches this year. SRH have won their last two matches comfortably at the venue and batting becomes fairly easy later with the dew settling in. The team winning the toss is expected to bowl first and the score of over 160 to 170 is likely to be a par total.

Weather Conditions

The sultry afternoon with a temperature of close to 40 Degrees Celsius will turn pleasant in Hyderabad by the time the match starts. The temperature will come down to the early 30s by 8 PM and there will not be much humidity as well. No rain is in the forecast.

Sunrisers Hyderabad

SRH didn’t play to their potential in the previous game and they are likely to keep their faith in the same set of players. They need a power hitter down the order and might get tempted to play Yusuf Pathan. But with the slow pitch on offer, the current combination looks good for them. Manish Pandey is back in form but with the middle-order woes, he should look to play through the innings now.

Kings XI Punjab

KXIP have been the most unpredictable team in terms of team selections this year. But they are struggling big time with the business end of the league stage approaching fast. Punjab can’t afford to do any experiments now and Sam Curran is likely to make a comeback in this game. Hardus Viljoen might be the man to make way for him while the rest of the side should be unchanged.

Probable Top Performers

Kane Williamson – SRH

Kane Williamson, strangely, has been off-colour this season. He opened for the first time in the previous game this year and might find his groove soon. The skipper needs to lead from the front and the Hyderabad pitch will suit his game perfectly. Williamson is due for a big knock and he needs to perform when the team needs him the most.

KL Rahul – KXIP

KL Rahul is once again having a season to remember. He has so far scored 441 runs in 11 matches at an impeccable average of 55.12 and might take a liking towards the SRH bowling attack. He will be aware of the situation in the points table and should look to play risk-free cricket with Gayle at the other end.
